Session Summary

43.076 - Learning Vocabulary in a Second Language: Exploring Challenges and Opportunities Across Levels of Development and Proficiency

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Provincial Ballroom North

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session brings together four papers which analyze data from randomized trials of vocabulary instructional interventions for second-language learners. We include studies across preschool to middle school, using a range of analytic techniques including mixed models with individual-by-item interactions, growth models, and analyses of differential item functioning with competing estimates of performance ability. Each paper provides a perspective on which kinds of lexical skills are challenging for second-language learners across the proficiency continuum and provides concrete suggestions for instruction and assessment of L2 vocabulary.
