Abstract

Vitriolic xenophobic and racist policies targeting Latinx youth (Gonzalez, 2015), sanctioned State violence against Black youth (Dumas, 2016; Morris, 2016), and the persistent exclusion of multiple identities that magnify the layers of oppression experienced by youth of color even in the context of affirming spaces (Annamma, 2013; Chapman, 2005) (e.g. audism in communities of color), continue to make Black and Latinx youth vulnerable to harm. This session brings together scholarship within community-based educational spaces, afterschool support groups, and community-embedded governmental organizations to demonstrate how these spaces create opportunities for youth to be “heard,” critically engaged in political education, and activism in this current political moment. This symposium also captures how community-spaces inadvertently dismiss the layered identities of Black and Latinx youth.
