Session Type: Symposium
This panel brings together scholars studying writing instruction in diverse contexts with multilingual and bilingual students in K-12 classrooms. Panelists argue for the need to reconsider writing workshop given the critiques of this approach for multilingual students as a method of literacy instruction that promotes student use of their full linguistic repertoires and modalities. The panelists will share new insights on the learning potential of writer’s workshop for bilingual students; illustrate how writing workshop can function as a vehicle to disrupt language ideologies that normalize monolingualism and render bilingual students’ linguistic knowledge invisible; identify key elements of writer’s workshop for multilingual students, the process for implementing these elements, and implications for teacher education.
