Session Type: Symposium
The symposium will explore the potential of multimodal data analysis and offer new lenses for critically framing and analyzing visual research to promote equity and social justice for diverse and/or marginalized learners. We argue that approaching literacy research from an expansive perspective has the potential to provide insight on the complexity of students’ literacy practices and dismantle deficit perspectives related to students’ participation in school learning (i.e. Author). We share our critical analyses of student-produced images as a means of: 1.) Framing the complexity of multimodal responses; 2.) Promoting multiple methods and techniques for critical visual analysis; 3.) Expanding equity-oriented analytic and conceptual frameworks.
