Abstract

This session offers localized, narrative-based analyses of “Youth, Theatre, Radical Hope and the Ethical Imaginary: An Intercultural Investigation of Drama Pedagogy, Performance and Civic Engagement”, a multi-sited, mixed methods ethnography that unfolded in schools, community spaces and theatres across Canada, England, Greece, India, and Taiwan. Despite their vastly diverse social, cultural, economic, and political backgrounds, youth from all sites were deeply concerned with a desire for “truth” and a truthful representation of themselves, their peers, and their communities as they devised dramatic works. Prescient, these youth anticipate/d the power and politics at play as one attempts to decipher what is “real” in a dislocated world - a movable feast or a dangerous iteration that lies somewhere between truth and fiction.
