81.020 - Centering Youth Knowledge in Teacher Education: Youth Participatory Action Research's Promise and Complexity for New Teacher Development

Abstract

This session considers the potential of engaging in youth participatory action research to improve teacher education. An introductory paper considers the conceptual framework for leveraging youth participatory action research (YPAR) in the service of teacher learning. The three following papers describe projects using YPAR in different teacher education contexts and address distinct yet interrelated critical issues: student teachers’ struggle between new and traditional understandings of youth and teaching; stances supporting preservice teachers as they develop new understandings of centering youth critical epistemologies; and how teaching candidates reconfigured relationships with youth as they engaged in participatory research. Discussant remarks from a prominent scholar/practitioner of participatory action research follow, and, finally, guided discussion on incorporating YPAR into participants’ teacher education curricula..
