45.019 - Designing Science Engagement: An International Perspective

Abstract

Globally policymakers and researchers have expressed a growing concern with the interest and achievement of students in elementary and secondary science. Worries about the few numbers of young people choosing science careers, lack of science literacy among nations, and criticism of existing science materials, has spurred a world-wide interest in promoting science education reform including standards, intervention innovations, and curricular redesigns. This international symposium describes efforts in several countries to raise awareness and activities to enhance science learning. Researchers from Chile, Finland, South Africa, US, and a new initiative from OECD discuss the implementation of several new national and international programs and their assessments designed to improve student academic and social and emotional learning and efforts at promoting teacher learning.
