35.055 - Community Resistance to the Forced Separation of Migrant Children

Abstract
The forced separation of migrant children from their parents resulted in mass protest from the public, media and politicians. It also brought a border community together to resist an unjust policy and give support to the separated families. With a focus on community engagement and advocacy leadership, this symposium takes up the issue of the how various institutions and organizations within a community rise and come together to address some gross injustices occurring in the community. Our findings reveal the commitment by community and NGOs to address inequities. We also provide recommendations from organizations on how to support families entering the community and schools.
