28.029 - Young Children's STEM Learning From Media: The Important Role of Parent Scaffolds and Confidence

Abstract
Media technology may offer a unique means to engage both children and their parents in math and science learning. This session brings together five research studies that explore how parents and young children engage in mathematics and science learning, and the role of media in supporting this engagement. Importantly, the results from these studies document the crucial role that parents own confidence and comfort with science and math play on their own abilities and interest in engaging their children in these subjects. The session will focus on describing the current context, including opportunities and challenges common to involving families in math and science learning, and examine the promise of media-based resources to support family engagement in these content areas.
