Abstract

As Gruenewald/Greenwood (2003/2009, 2010) argues, critical PBE offers what environmental education has sometimes ignored: that ecological and social discourses are interconnected, and must be taught as such to resist the colonizing forces of schooling as a tool of empire. In this symposium, the participants will offer critical perspectives in Place-based education from multiple locations, and using different methodologies and lenses; these include inquiries into inter-species, intercultural understandings regarding hunting and fishing, critical Place-based education that centres Land and Indigenous sovereignty, non-binary gender perspectives in Place-based environmental education, and the importance of onto-epistemic heterogeneity in understanding climate change. These positions deepen and enliven environmental education; through sharing our research, we aim to centre critical and intersectional positions in critical Place-based education.
