Session Summary

51.032 - Finding Freedom and Fugitivity in Literacies: Multimodal Narratives as Lived Resistance in Educational Spaces

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 712

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Panelists illustrate the multiple ways that educators and youth of color (specifically Black and Latinx educators and youth) enact fugitivity in educational contexts by refusing, resisting, and destabilizing notions of learning typically used to undermine non-White ways of knowing. Through six grounded studies, panelists interrogate and build on representations of fugitive literacies as embodied and culturally-sustaining practices leveraged to work toward justice and equity in both formal and informal learning spaces. This panel also serves to introduce the presenters’ collaborative efforts to construct what we call a “Fugitive Literacies Collective”– a community of critical scholar-friends of color committed to humanizing educational research and practice that refuses the dehumanization of marginalized peoples through critical examinations of their ongoing fugitivity and survival.
