Abstract

This symposium explores the methodological possibilities in visual research. Drawing on four distinct visual research projects, we offer meditations on methodological pluralism within visual research and seek to trouble the notion that an image stands for any one thing. Each paper details the methodological approach used and how it responds to key issues in visual research: analysis and interpretation of visual data; researcher-participant relationships; and the role of the aesthetic, affective, and material in visual research. The symposium highlights the need for researchers to explore methodological possibilities in visual research. The papers presented in this panel cross disciplinary and theoretical boundaries, ranging from early childhood education to youth studies, arts-based research to visual sociology, post-qualitative research to participatory research.
