Session Summary

51.059 - Contemplative Practice in Educational Spaces

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Confederation 6

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Yoga in the United States and Canada manifests in both liberating and imperialist ways (Berila, Klein, Jackson Roberts, 2016). As four women of Colour (Black and South Asian) scholars located in three US states and Ontario, Canada, we explore how yoga and other contemplative practices emerge in various contexts with complex implications for access, profit, wellness, and liberation. The presenters will explore such constructs as spirituality in higher education, contemplative practice in teacher education, Black girlhood, and considerations of intellectual property and private ownership in yoga.
