Session Summary

35.040 - It's On You, MSU: Critically Addressing Sexual Violence at Michigan State University and Beyond

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 6:10pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Second Floor, Churchill

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In January 2018, Michigan State University entered the national spotlight for a decades-long sexual abuse scandal. Although MSU has garnered much media attention in the last year for its mishandling of sexual violence, scholarly analyses have yet to emerge. This symposium brings together educational researchers from different fields and with varying research agendas to analyze MSU’s failures in addressing sexual violence and to consider ways to move forward. Perspectives include governance and organization, policy, neoliberal logics, and faculty and student activism. The symposium presents MSU as a case for understanding mishandling of campus sexual violence and, through discussion with participants, will offer lessons for addressing sexual violence in other higher education institutions as well.
