Abstract

Our session examines the design of learning environments that foster the development of socio-critical literacies (Gutiérrez, 2008), practices necessary for imagining new equitable social futures. In this respect, we center sociocultural learning and development as occurring across and within contexts (Cole, 1996). The presentations in this session illuminate the joint work of teachers, at various stages of development, as they co-design expansive pedagogical practices and multimodal tools that connect, develop, and amplify transformative learning across geographic and temporal scales. In doing so, the authors offer findings from design-based work (Cobb, Confrey, diSessa, Lehrer, & Schauble, 2003; Gutiérrez & Jurow, 2016) that highlights teacher learning as they help youth dissolve the boundaries between their everyday, academic, and civic lives.
