Session Summary

31.044 - MakEval: Mixed Methods Approaches to Evaluating Making in Schools

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Tutor 7

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Making has gained a lot of attention in the last few years for its promise in engaging a wide array of learners, but there is a lack of robust instruments available for assessing these experiences. While we and others have attempted to tinker with rubrics or tools that exist for evaluating STEM-learning in making experiences, it has been our experience that extant tools do not directly transfer to making contexts. In this session we will present a series of talks about a suite of tools we developed to measure constructs that maker educators indicated they need to assess making, including: agency, STEM practices, STEM interest and identity, creativity and critical thinking.
