Abstract

Educational researchers have increasingly embraced multimodal methods, as evidenced by the conference theme. However, even these seemingly more inclusive and expansive research approaches can be exclusionary and marginalizing. As multimodal research becomes more common, critical conversations and innovative approaches are needed. This symposium brings together methods of multimodal research that push the field in new directions, such as 360-degree video, screencapture recording, timelapse video, and participatory photography, convening a critical conversation about the potentials and limitations of visual research for (re)framing understandings of educational places and practices. Our discussion will highlight the unique affordances of new approaches and invite participants to collectively consider how they can bring into focus new ways of seeing, knowing, and understanding.
