Session Type: Symposium
This symposium expands on scholarship that eschews deficit views by privileging the meanings that learners negotiate and develop as they engage in activity. We consider how treating learning as a members’ phenomenon (Stevens, 2010), can serve to illuminate endogenously organized teaching-learning interactions across diverse settings and activities. Case studies examine how young people assemble and orient to their activities as teaching and/or learning events in three distinct settings: a high school robotics team, a school field trip to a science museum, and a teen tutoring center. The cases explore the utility of treating learning as a members’ phenomenon for studies of informal learning, while also critically expanding this approach to include explicit attention to issues of power.
