Session Type: Symposium
This symposium examines issues of equity in undergraduate mathematics education through different dimensions of historically marginalized students’ experiences. Paper 1 proposes a framework that challenges deficit perspectives about mathematical sense-making, with an analytical focus on women of color. Paper 2 details two Latinx community college women’s reflections about their instructional experiences in developmental mathematics. Paper 3 documents variation in African American male STEM majors’ engagement with undergraduate mathematics classroom instruction. Paper 4 examines variation in identity constructions through helping behaviors among two undergraduate men of color pursuing mathematics-intensive STEM majors. Paper 5 details quantitative trends in reported perceptions of racial-ethnic and mathematics identities among White students and students of color from a multi-institution survey study.
