Session Summary

66.038 - Renewed Risks of Race Talk: Discussing Race in K–12 Classrooms, Teacher Education Courses, and Research

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 706

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this symposium, we seek to interrogate the ways that K-12 teachers, teacher educators, and researchers address race. Because we understand that
engaging in critical conversations about race-related issues is a complex, difficult and sometimes terrifying endeavor (Gay, 2004; Howard, 2004; 2003; Leonardo, 2002), particularly in a climate of heightened racial tension, we also understand that there are risks associated with choosing not to remain silent and to instead participate in dialogue. We also seek to explore these risks that come along with engaging race in classrooms and research.
