Abstract

This symposium will engage in the ways “diversity” and/or “inclusion” efforts that occur in predominantly white spaces need to be disrupted, so as to more authentically create space for racially-just practices. Exploring a variety of theoretical frameworks and methods (including ethnography and counterstory), the papers offer pedagogical considerations and the grounding needed for additional qualitative studies of the phenomenology of racialized dynamics in a variety of contexts. The exploration of such practices encompasses diverse educational spaces, including a liberal arts college, a public university’s doctoral program, and high school classrooms in urban and suburban settings. In terms of temporality, the papers look to historical context, for grounding, and to the futurities of liberatory praxis in a demographically evolving landscape.
