Abstract

A growing number of scholars have highlighted inequities in dual language (DL) education affecting the educational lives of minoritized students. These concerns have pointed to the need to transform DL education to meet the needs of these students. Sociopolitical consciousness—awareness of injustices and how to fight them—becomes essential in this transformative process. The presenters in this session will show how they have placed sociopolitical consciousness as the fourth goal of DL education in their work. Presentations include three empirical papers illustrating how educators have incorporated the principle of sociopolitical consciousness in their classrooms and two position papers highlighting the role and potential of this principle.
