35.077-3 - These Are the Breaks: Ruptures in Coloniality in Educational Leadership

Sat, April 6, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Education has traditionally centered around whiteness, capitalism, and settler colonialism which confine conceptions of educational leadership and marginalize youth and educators of Color. Hip Hop pioneer, Kurtis Blow, however, reminded non-dominant communities of the agentive potential to create breaks (1980) and fissures within oppressive conditions. This symposium explores counterstories (Solórzano & Yosso, 2002) and testimonio (Delgado Bernal, Burciaga, & Flores Carmona, 2012) as breaks in coloniality that reframe notions of educational leadership. By forefronting counternarratives from non traditional educational leaders, this symposium crosses boundaries that problematize the dominant discourse while contributing to a more complex and expansive sociocultural and political context in Educational Leadership.
