Abstract

The 2019 Annual AERA meeting theme, leveraging Education Research in a “Post-Truth” Era: Multimodal Narratives to Democratize Evidence; challenges us to understand the historical role of Eurocentric research and dominant narratives in education. We undertake this challenge to highlight the ways in which Eurocentrism universalizes; marginalizes and imposes upon Indigenous and Black and Brown epistemologies in educational research and schooling. Panelist in this symposium argue that Eurocentrism is standardized and normalized as educational research; a phenomenon that Walter Mignolo calls two-sides of the same coin. The two-sides of the same coin concept alludes to knowledge construction that censors the epistemologies of those under it’s subjugation (Mignolo, 2012). These “epistemological fractures [are] Eurocentric critique[s] of Eurocentrism” (Mignolo, 2012, p. 37).
