25.057 - Our Hemispheric Legacy: Reclaiming Educational Excellence Through the Voices and Experiences of Latina/o/x Youth

Abstract

This symposium foregrounds an empirical examination of excellence in education across K-12 schools, home, and community to consider how excellence is born, grown, and cultivated in southern California’s Inland Empire. Presenters draw from an in-depth, cross-case, comparative, phenomenological exploration of excellence based on the voices and experiences of Latina/o/x high school youth and their families. Findings suggest that excellence is a hemispheric legacy and intergenerational asset fostered in the home. Presenters highlight excellence in the schools and homes of high school youth via educational journeys, photovoice projects, and loteria (mexican bingo) cards. The presenters demonstrate how schools can and must intentionally produce the conditions that facilitate educational equity and excellence across school, home and community.
