51.042 - Division K Vice President's Address: What Kind of Teacher Education Do We Need in Our Turbulent Times

Abstract

We live in a time of growing precarity, a term used by cultural anthropologists and social critics to describe the living conditions that differentially expose marginalized populations to destabilization, insecurity, and violence. In order to think through what kind of teacher education we need in the current times we are living in, I begin with narratives of how groups of teachers, schools and community-based organizations have addressed the precarity and distrust of our times. From those stories, I suggest a few principles to guide our how we approach teacher education in our current social and historical context.
