Session Summary

51.035 - Sympathetic and/or Agentic? Constructions of Youth in Educational Scholarship

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 704

Session Type: Paper Session

Abstract

Depictions of children in crisis are frequently deployed to generate adult sympathy toward -- and sometimes adult advocacy for -- victimized youth. For educational scholars, what are the affordances and limitations of such depictions? And by contrast, what becomes possible when young people are conceived of, depicted, and engaged as active agents of knowledge production and social transformation? The papers in this session collectively present an opportunity to consider the politics of sympathetic and/or agentic constructions of youth in educational scholarship on their experiences.
