Session Summary

18.020 - A Mother Knows: Understanding Mothers as Pedagogical Agents

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 710

Session Type: Paper Session

Abstract

While mothers are presumed as central figures in the lives of children, they are not always deemed by schools as pedagogical agents. In some cases, cultural deficit lenses actually cast mothers as a detriment to, rather than as asset for, their children’s education. Against this backdrop, the papers in this session consider how mothers, situated across diverse cultural contexts, develop and deploy knowledge about pedagogical practices that can serve their children’s learning needs.
