45.048 - Understanding and Addressing the Costs of Teaching in Diverse Communities in a "Post-Truth" Era

Abstract

Recent teacher strikes in the United States have brought public attention to the high costs of being and becoming a teacher. Persistently lower salaries, increased teacher certification requirements, and the status of the teaching profession are leading many teachers to leave or not enter the profession. This is particularly true for teachers from underrepresented groups. This panel will feature papers and presentations that address current perceptions of the value and costs of teacher education and teaching, their consequences for teachers and schools, and efforts teacher education and schools are engaging in to address these issues. Special focus will be placed on the recruitment and retention of teachers from and teaching in diverse communities.
