31.054 - Reckoning With the Past: Race, Reparations, and Legacies of Slavery, Colonialism, and White Supremacy in K–12 and Higher Education Institutions

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 202B

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

This session will discuss efforts on the part of educational institutions to redress legacies of racism that are manifest in the built environments of schools (e.g., prominent statues and memorials on campus) and in policies, curricula, and institutional norms and behaviors. Panelists will reflect upon challenges the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and white supremacy raise for educational institutions. They will further consider how such legacies (as well as their contemporary manifestations) affect the experiences of current students and other stakeholders and what opportunities efforts to reckon with them present to institutional leaders, educators, students, and alumni.
