51.010 - Ethnic Studies at 50: The Unfulfilled Promise of Equity and Justice

Abstract

The year 1969 has been considered the year when everything changed. This session will focus on particular events and movements in 1969 that shifted and impacted civil and human rights advocacies for equity and justice in the United States and Canada. In particular, it will track the histories and legacies of the following: (1) the establishment of Ethnic Studies through the Third World Liberation Front strikes in San Francisco and Berkeley, California; (2) the birth of the modern LGBTQ movement through the Stonewall riots in New York; and (3) the emergence of the Red Power movement in Canada when Indigenous peoples mobilized against the government’s White Paper, also known as the Statement of the Government of Canada on Indian Policy.
