27.010 - Youth Participation for Innovation

Abstract

This year the AERA Graduate Student Council will partner with Hive Toronto a community network of grassroots, non-profit, educational and industry organizations committed to promoting digital literacy and access. Hive Toronto is stewarded by Humber College a polytechnic ITAL (Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning), one of Canada’s largest colleges, with a mission to develop global citizens with the knowledge and skills to lead and innovate. Together, the Graduate Student Council and Hive Toronto will host an event in Toronto for school children and their families. Events on Friday, April 5, and Saturday April 6, will bring together youth-serving organizations united by the principles of connected learning that is social, participatory, and interest-driven. During the event, students and families will be engaged with activities that promote values of equity, social belonging, and community participation. Organizational partners include museums, libraries, coding clubs, informal learning spaces and afterschool programs that will volunteer to be part of this two-day event for students and families in Toronto.

We are looking for youth focused organizations to design and host a drop-in activity focused around
digital citizenship
hands-on-learning
social participation
design thinking
community building (and more)

Possible organizational partners can include youth-serving organizations such as museums, libraries, afterschool programs and makerspaces.
