47.015 - Leveraging the Test Standards to Improve Research Validity

Abstract

Measurement has long been cited as an Achilles heel of research (Knight, 2002; Pedhazur & Schmelkin, 1991), echoing recent prominent research syntheses advocating for its improvement (National Research Council, 2012; 2017). Meanwhile, the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (2014) offers a gold standard for measurement that could be brought to bear, and research journal review processes offer a potential leverage point for such improvement. This symposium highlights the Test Standards of most relevance for improving research measures, focusing on those of validity and fairness, and considers how these standards might be better incorporated into journal review procedures. The session features experts in the Standards as presenters; discussants will include a prominent validity theorist and editors from AERA, APA and NCME journals.
