51.016 - "The Future of Education and Education Research”—A Conversation with Karen Marrongelle

Abstract

This open discussion forum provides an opportunity to meet with Dr. Karen Marrongelle, Assistant Director for Education and Human Resources (EHR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). This session will start with a brief talk from Dr. Marrongelle. She will offer some initial reflections since commencing her appointment at NSF in October 2018 and her aspirations. She will discuss what she sees as important opportunities for the education research community and priority areas meriting attention, including the relevance of the interdisciplinary NSF Big Ideas for education researchers. She will also offer her perspective on what education research scholars should be thinking about in order to produce the knowledge that is essential to education and learning trajectories--present and future.

This session is structured as an open discussion forum. Dr. Marrongelle is interested engaged conversation with the research community--graduate students, early career scholars, and senior researchers alike--about investments and critical issues in education research whether or not they are yet on the agenda of NSF. This open forum will be moderated by AERA immediate Past President Deborah Loewenberg Ball who served on the NSF Science Board from 2013-2018.
