66.018 - Race, Truth, and Academic Freedom: A Conversation With Marc Lamont Hill

Abstract

This session includes a presentation and question/answer period featuring Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. One focus is on Dr. Hill’s experiences as a scholar with an appointment in a school of journalism, and the challenges and opportunities of engaging and collaborating with public media (journalists, radio/television). In addition, the session will engage the potential perils and consequences of participating as a scholar in highly contested political spaces in the public media (as an example the tensions around and consequences of Dr. Hill’s public statements of pro-Palestine positions and subsequent forced departure from his role at CNN). The example will be used to engage attendees around broader issues around race, truth, and academic freedom, including scholarly lenses on these issues and applications to other current cases/events relevant to education and society.
