Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
This session engages the link (and sometimes disconnect) between an educational organization’s stated/espoused ideals and its own organizational practices and strategies. This proposed session would start with a research-based introduction on the evolution and roles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plans in higher education (as well as the evolving roles of institutional diversity officers in those plans). This includes brief presentations of current key challenges and case examples, followed by a moderated panel. The panel will take up the ways that issues of justice are viewed (or not) within institutional DEI planning and efforts, the tensions involved in addressing DEI and justice from the perspectives of different campus constituencies, and how Chief Diversity Officers of color think about their own identities in navigating these tensions, among other themes.
