Formalize, Prioritize, Mobilize: Exploring the Role of School Leaders in Maximizing the Impact of the New Forest Professional Learning Network

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Professional learning networks (PLNs) of teachers and others collaborating outside their everyday community of practice, are considered to be an effective way to foster school improvement. The aim of this study is to explore the acts of leadership best suited to supporting the meaningful participation of teachers within PLNs, to not only engage in PLNs in ways that helps improve knowledge and practice, but also helps ensure new knowledge/innovations are widely and effectively used by their colleagues. We attempt to throw light on this issue through an exploration of leadership activity in one specific type of PLN known as a Research Learning Network; through a case study of six schools, comprising 12 leaders and nine ‘opinion former’ teachers.
