Emotion and Curriculum: Teaching English Language Arts While Grieving a Death

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the lived experiences of secondary English language arts (ELA) teachers who are teaching ELA curriculum while also grieving a death. Findings show that teachers regulated their emotions and personal responses in literature discussions because of their perceptions of professional roles. Teachers' experiences must be considered in conversations about ELA curriculum that addresses death and loss and in development of trauma-informed teaching professional development.
