"This Style of Pedagogy Is Not Like a Lecture in a Classroom": Humanizing Pedagogy of Knowledge

Abstract

According to Freire, (1970) humanizing pedagogy seeks to help adults learn to read and read the world. Humanizing pedagogy “ceases to be an instrument by which teachers can manipulate students, but rather expresses the consciousness of the students themselves” (p. 51). A humanizing pedagogy has philosophical and ideological principles which include radical construction of teaching and learning, mutual humanization, and consciousness. The literature calls for a deeper understanding and examination of how these principles and practices are implemented in educational settings (Dale & Hyslop-Margison, 2010). provide two examples of how humanizing pedagogy principles and practices were adapted to support (Un)documented Latinx youth struggles to transform social injustice within a unique context of a community youth-based organization in the Midwest.
