Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide an integrated understanding of college students’ perceptions of effective teaching centering on students’ voices and learning experience. This study identified prominent attributes of teaching effectiveness from interviews with undergraduate and graduate students at a midwestern research university through an interpretive phenomenological approach. The results provide a diverse palette of definitions of effective teaching to teachers who strive to be better. This study offers insight into teaching effectiveness and a useful guiding mechanism for teachers in developing a repertoire of effective and engaging teaching skills as well as in reaching their full teaching potential.
