We Lift as We Rise: Reconceptualizing Resistance as Asian American Female Teacher Educator-Scholars

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Former K-12 teachers of color who transition to tenure-line positions often experience microaggressions which leave them questioning their value in academic spaces. Instead of emphasizing the power and possibilities for public good that come from practice-informed theory, theory-informed praxis, and funds of knowledge (Moll, Amanti, Neff, & Gonzalez, 1992) female teacher educator-scholars of color bring to their work, our experiences are often dismissed/invalidated. Using an Asian American (Women of Color) feminist lens (Fujiwara & Roshanravan, 2018), we offer counter-stories (Solórzano & Yosso, 2002) that make visible our struggle as Asian American female teacher educator-scholars, highlighting how our efforts at coalitional resistance provide spaces to survive and thrive in academia, for ourselves and our critical Women of Color colleagues.
