Understanding Children's Reading Experiences With an Interactive E-Book: Exploring the Affordances of User Log Data

Abstract

While the advanced e-book technology provides a dynamic digital learning environment to young readers with more individualized reading experiences, it also poses challenges to educators and researchers regarding precisely tracking digital reading behaviors and evaluating learning effectiveness in an unobtrusive manner. Using the interactive features and user logs of an interactive e-book, the current study explores one way to gain insights on children’s reading behaviors and learning outcomes while maintaining and supporting reading flow. Specifically, we examine how three behavioral log variables are associated with child characteristics and their digital learning effectiveness. Our results highlight the potential of the e-book log data, as a low-cost and reliable data source for analyzing children’s reading behaviors and evaluating their digital learning effectiveness.
