The focus of professional learning has changed from the use of activities to the internal growth or change of teachers. We report a three-year whole-school approach to collaborative action research based on student feedback at a secondary school. Quantitative data were obtained by administering two surveys in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (N=2673 students in 171 classes) to assess students’ perceptions of the learning environment and their self-efficacy. Qualitative information, involving classroom observations and interviews with the principal and professional development coordinator, illuminated how the school incorporated this collaborative action research approach. Statistically-significant differences for numerous aspects of the learning environment and for self-efficacy were found between the 2012, 2013 and 2014 groups.
