Mixed-methods research rarely incorporates biological methods, but the study of human social-emotional functioning is best understood by considering jointly biologically, psychologically, and socio-culturally factors. Qualitative methods elucidate how people experience their feelings; neurophysiological tools reveal the biological precursors to feelings. These techniques are rarely used together. Here I describe a practical mixed-methods model for the biopsychosocial study of social-emotions. I conclude by proposing guiding principles for biopsychosocial mixed-methods research that uses neurophysiological and qualitative methods. Conducting mixed-method research that integrates qualitative and biological data is not only possible but also an impactful technique worthy of greater utilization.
