Institutionalized Whiteness in Higher Education: Critical Discourse Analysis of University Diversity Strategic Plans

Abstract

I examine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategic plans at the University of Michigan to investigate racial equity efforts and institutionalized whiteness. Using critical discourse analysis (van Dijk, 1993) guided by Feagin’s (2010) white racial frame, I interrogate how systemic racism persists in university norms, practices, and policies through institutionalized whiteness.
