Abstract

This study examined preparation for, enrollment in, and graduation from college for first-generation college students (FGCS) from one- and two-parent families. We examined eight alternative definitions of "first-generation" and the number of college-educated parents relative to the number of parents in the family. We found that the relationship between FGCS status and outcomes varied along all three dimensions. Our findings have particular implications for the ways in which researchers define FGCS as well as how they consider the relationship between FGCS status and other highly correlated socioeconomic characteristics. It also has implications for higher education leaders defining FGCS as part of programs and policies designed to improve their college success.
