Feminists' Teachers' Evolution Toward Gender Equity in Uncertain Times

Abstract

In a previous study before the #MeToo Movement, the authors examined how feminist teachers were counteracting underrepresentation of women in social studies. The results revealed commonalities in combating sexism, yet differences based on the teachers’ feminist perspectives (liberal feminists or critical feminists). In this study, the researchers return to their participants to follow up on if, or how, their beliefs, teaching practices, and curricula may have changed since. Five years later the six feminist teachers were interviewed and observed. The data revealed that, all but one, feminist teacher had become more critical. Five out six teachers reported feeling a need to respond to the current climate for women and create more opportunities for their students to learn about gender equity
