Community-Based Strategies for Strengthening Postsecondary Outcomes for Deaf People

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

To ameliorate postsecondary disparities for deaf individuals, decisions are often made about deaf individuals’ needs without including them in that decision-making. Engaging underrepresented community members in solution-based approaches can provide clarity on strategies for improvement directly impacting their community. This study utilized community based participatory research as a framework for hosting community conversations about improving postsecondary outcomes of deaf individuals. Qualitative data from participants were used to identify key themes emerging from these conversations. Key areas of need were related to system change, partnerships and resource sharing, transition planning and youth skills, supporting deaf youth and families, access to programs and services, and professional development. These strategies serve as actionable items for professionals and community members serving those communities.
