Virtual reality (VR) is becoming a technology that could potentially have a large impact on education. Where VR could potentially mitigate losses is the declining state of hands-on chemistry experiment exercises in schools. However, if resources are to be invested wisely in this technology it is imperative that we understand its pedagogical implications and unique affordances. This study compares learning results from a chemistry experiment conducted in VR with those resulting from its real-life counterpart. Results showed that VR participants learned similar amounts when compared to participants in the real lab. Safety and lab skills improved more in real-life over VR participants. Also, it was observed that students do not retain knowledge similarly across both conditions.
