A Psychometric Evaluation of Math Homework Purpose Scale

Abstract

The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Math Homework Purpose Scale (MHPS). Having randomly split the sample (n = 854) into two subsamples, we conducted exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with subsample 1 (n = 427) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with subsample 2 (n = 427). Both EFA and CFA results showed that the MPHS included three factors: Academic, Self-regulatory, and Approval-seeking. Given an adequate level of measurement invariance, we further examined the latent mean difference across gender for the entire sample. Results showed no statistically significant mean differences in Academic, Self-regulatory, and Approval-seeking across gender. Finally, consistent with theoretical expectations, Academic, self-regulatory, and Approval-seeking were positively correlated with homework effort, homework completion, and math achievement.
